Buying a used car is a great investment, but you want to know what you’re buying before you sign the paperwork.

Schedule a pre-purchase inspection with a trusted auto repair shop before you buy, so you can catch problems that aren’t obvious during a test drive.

At Platt’s Performance Plus, our technicians can give you more information about a vehicle’s condition before making your purchase.

What does a Pre-Purchase Inspection check?

A professional used car inspection can identify existing problems, safety issues, and maintenance that may need to be done soon.

Depending on the vehicle, your technician might check areas such as:

      Engine and transmission condition

      Brakes, tires, steering, and suspension

      Fluid leaks and fluid condition

Warning lights and diagnostic trouble codes

      Cooling and exhaust systems

Signs of previous repairs or damage

      Upcoming maintenance needs

A vehicle history report only tells you part of the story. That’s why it’s important to physically inspect the car.

Avoid expensive surprises. A used car that looks like a good deal could quickly become expensive if major repairs are needed shortly after you buy it.

A pre-purchase inspection gives you important information before the money changes hands. If problems are found, you can consider the repair costs, discuss them with the seller, or decide whether the vehicle is still right for you.

Have the vehicle inspected by a repair shop you trust.

Whether you buy from a dealership or a private seller, have your own trusted auto repair shop inspect the car. An independent technician can provide an objective assessment of the vehicle’s current condition.

There was a time when disconnecting your car battery was a simple, low-risk task. Whether you were storing a vehicle for winter or swapping in a new battery, all it took was a wrench and a few minutes. Fast-forward to today’s vehicles, and that same simple act can cause a cascade of issues, requiring professional tools, software, and know-how to set everything right again.

      So, what changed? In short:

      technology.

      Modern Vehicles Are Rolling Computers

Today’s cars are equipped with dozens of computer modules that control everything from the engine and transmission to the heated seats and adaptive headlights. These modules constantly “talk” to each other and rely on a steady source of power to retain important memory settings.

When you disconnect the battery, you’re essentially cutting off the brain’s power supply—and that comes with consequences.

What Can Go Wrong After a Battery Disconnect?

          Loss of memory settings

         – This includes your radio presets, clock, seat/mirror positions, and more.

          Security system lockout

         – Anti-theft systems can get confused and require dealer-level tools to reset.

          Check engine lights

         – Disconnecting the battery might cause false codes or sensors to reset improperly.

          Electronic throttle body issues

         – Some vehicles require throttle relearning procedures after battery loss.

          Steering angle sensor misalignment

         – This affects traction control and electronic stability systems.

          Battery monitoring system

         – Many newer cars use a Battery Management System (BMS) that must be reset or reprogrammed when a battery is disconnected or replaced.

     Vacuum leak or overheating
This one might mean there’s a leak in your vacuum system, or worse, your engine’s overheating. It is best not to ignore it.

Could be minor, could be serious. Either way, let’s get under there and check it out.
If the sound rises with speed, you may have uneven tire wear or bad bearings both of which affect your safety on the road.

      Bottom Line: Don’t Ignore It

Maintenance & Repair Differences Between European & Domestic Vehicles

Both have their benefits, but both have distinct maintenance and repair requirements. If you have a European vehicle or are looking into one, knowing the differences can help you make informed decisions about maintenance and costs.

      1. Parts Availability & Cost

The parts availability and cost are two of the biggest differences between foreign and domestic cars. European cars like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and others often have unique part needs that may not be accessible at your auto parts store. Some need to be imported, leading to longer wait times and more expenses. But, parts for domestic vehicles like Ford, Chevrolet, and Dodge, are ubiquitous and fairly cheap.

      2. Repair & Maintenance Costs

European cars are usually crafted with great precision and sophistication, making repairs more complicated. Some European models, like the 2022 BMW 440i, require special diagnostic tools and training; not all repair shops are equipped to service them. Labor costs are often higher than with domestic products, which tend to be less complex and more affordable to repair or maintain.

      3. Oil Changes & Fluid Requirements

Different fluids are included in the new IS350. Many oils, coolants, and transmission fluids must match manufacturer requirements for European vehicles. Domestic vehicles are also often more common, meaning fluids and lubricants stored in a corner store are generally cheaper than imported copies which can increase overall maintenance duties. Some European models have longer oil-change intervals, but they also take synthetic oil, which is expensive.

      4. Technology & Electronics

European cars are among the most complicated on the planet, but they come with complexity. More complex problems to fix are the advanced electrical systems, computerized modules, and complex sensors. Besides new tech, domestic vehicles are also outfitted with simpler standardized electrical equipment, which makes repairs far more manageable and affordable.

      5. Performance & Driving Experience

Most European-based vehicles are focused on sport, accurate handling, and comfort. This focus on engineering excellence carries over to the production of sophisticated components like suspension systems, braking systems, and transmissions. High-performance parts, however, don’t last as long and require additional maintenance and specialized knowledge. On the other hand, domestic cars are built for longevity and serviceability, meaning that they frequently forfeit superior performance tuning for reliability.

      6. Longevity & Reliability

European cars offer excellent performance but may be somewhat costlier to maintain down the road. Well-maintained Volvos and Mercedes-Benzes will hold up for decades. Of course, domestics like Ford and Chevrolet have simpler mechanics, so they can be easier to own long-term.

Which One is Right for You?

If you prefer something European or domestic all depends on your values. If you love cutting-edge technology, high performance, and luxury driving without sweating the costs of ownership, a European car may be for you. If cost, simplicity, and parts availability are key points for you, a domestic car will probably suit you better.

How often you change your oil also depends on your driving habits and the local environment in NJ. If you frequently drive in heavy traffic, take short trips, or operate your vehicle in extreme temperatures, your oil will degrade faster. These conditions are considered severe driving, meaning oil changes are necessary every 3,000 with semi-synthetic or every 5,000 miles with full synthetic.

Many vehicles now use synthetic or semi-synthetic oil, which lasts longer than conventional oil. Synthetic oil is designed to resist breaking down, allowing for extended oil change intervals—some vehicles can go up to 10,000 miles between changes when using full synthetic oil. However, it’s important to check your owner’s manual and consult with our technicians to determine the best oil change schedule for your type of driving.

After an oil change, you may feel a difference in your vehicle's performance, such as smoother acceleration, better fuel efficiency, and less engine noise. Fresh oil helps improve the engine's efficiency, and

Getting a free oil change on your car at the dealer might sound like a really good deal at first. Free sounds good! But it is important to consider the problems with this free offer.

One of the biggest problems of getting a free oil change at the dealer is that they usually don't inspect your car for other issues. While changing the oil is part of regular maintenance, it's not the only thing that needs to be checked. Without a full inspection, you could be missing out on important information about anything else that will be coming up with your car or truck.

When you take your car to the dealer for an oil change, the mechanics may just change the oil. They might not look for other issues like worn brake pads, a leaky radiator, or a dying battery. Without a good inspection, these problems can be missed and lead to bigger and more expensive repairs down the road. You don’t want to be stranded on the road somewhere.

An independent auto repair shop such as Platt’s Performance though, does a full inspection service when it does its oil changes. It would include a full inspection with every oil change. We use Factory diagnostic tools only. This will give you peace of mind, knowing that your car is being checked for any possible issues. It will help catch any small problems before they turn into major problems, saving you time and money in the long run.

It's important to remember that issues with your air conditioner system in your vehicle can be caused by a variety of issues, not just a lack of Freon. From broken blend door flaps to faulty compressors, there are many different components that can impact the functionality of your air conditioning.

In this case, this 2012 Chevrolet Camaro, the blend door flap located in the climate control box in the dashboard broke off.

To repair this problem the dashboard had to be removed to gain access to the climate control box to replace the blend door flap. In order to remove the dashboard, the windshield had to be removed to gain access to two mounting bolts for the dashboard brace. This is a complex repair. While it seems like a minor issue, your air conditioning system could have major implications.

As the temperatures rise and the days grow longer, it's time to prepare your vehicle for those summer road trips. At Platts Performance Plus, we understand the importance of ensuring your vehicle is in optimal condition for safe and enjoyable travels. Before you embark on your summer adventures, here are some crucial checkpoints to consider:

         Check Tires and Tire Pressures:

Before hitting the road, it's imperative to inspect your tires thoroughly. Our expert technicians will examine all four tires for signs of wear and tear, including cuts, gouges, and sidewall bubbles. Additionally, we'll check the tire pressure to ensure it meets the manufacturer's recommendations, enhancing both safety and fuel efficiency. Tread depth will also be assessed to guarantee adequate traction on various road surfaces.

         Brakes:

Your vehicle's braking system is paramount for safety, especially during long summer journeys. At Platts Performance Plus, we conduct comprehensive brake inspections to evaluate the condition of your brakes. From listening and feeling for any abnormalities during a test drive to measuring brake pad thickness after removing tires and calipers, we leave no stone unturned in ensuring your brakes are ready to handle the demands of summer travel.

         Test the Battery:

A reliable battery is essential for ensuring your vehicle starts when you need it the most. Our battery tests assess both the charge and health of your battery, providing you with peace of mind knowing that your vehicle is equipped to handle the rigors of summer travel.

Top Off Engine Oil and Fluids:

Beyond engine oil, other vital fluids often get overlooked but are crucial for maintaining optimal vehicle performance. Through our digital vehicle inspections, we meticulously examine and top up all essential fluids, including coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid. This proactive approach helps prevent potential breakdowns and ensures smooth operation during your summer excursions.

         Wiper Blades:

Clear visibility is paramount for safe driving, especially during summer showers or encounters with insects on the road. Our technicians will inspect and replace worn-out wiper blades to ensure your windshield remains clear of debris. Additionally, we'll fill the windshield washer reservoir with a high-quality cleaning fluid and test the nozzles to guarantee effective windshield cleaning capabilities.

         Check Belts and Hoses:

The engine's drive belts and radiator hoses play vital roles in maintaining proper engine function, particularly in high-temperature conditions. Cracked, glazed, or frayed belts can lead to engine overheating or accessory failure, while worn or damaged hoses may result in coolant leaks. Our thorough inspection will identify and replace any compromised belts or hoses, minimizing the risk of breakdowns during your summer travels.

         Keep the AC Running Cool:

Don't let the summer heat take the joy out of your road trip. Our air conditioning system tests ensure that your AC is operating at peak performance, providing you with cool and comfortable cabin temperatures throughout your journey. If you notice a decrease in cooling capacity, don't hesitate to schedule a reservation with us to diagnose and address any issues promptly.

There are several reasons why it's often recommended to leave car battery issues to professionals:

      Safety Concerns:

Working with car batteries involves handling corrosive materials and electrical components. Incorrect handling can lead to accidents, injuries, or damage to your vehicle. Professionals are trained to follow safety protocols to minimize risks.

      Complexity:

Modern vehicles are equipped with complex electrical systems, and diagnosing battery issues requires knowledge of these systems. Professionals have the expertise to correctly identify the cause of the problem and fix it effectively.

      Specialized Tools:

Car battery issues often require specialized tools for testing and diagnosing problems. Professional mechanics have access to these tools, which the average car owner may not have.

      Warranty Concerns:

If your vehicle is under warranty, attempting to perform repairs or replacements yourself could void the warranty. Professional technicians are trained to work within warranty guidelines and maintain the coverage on your vehicle.

      Correct Diagnosis:

Sometimes what seems like a battery issue might be a symptom of a larger problem with the alternator, starter, or other components. Professionals can perform a comprehensive diagnosis to ensure that the correct issue is addressed, preventing future breakdowns.

      Proper Installation:

Installing a new battery incorrectly can lead to further issues. Professionals know the proper procedures for removing and installing car batteries, ensuring that everything is connected correctly and securely.

      Environmental Considerations

: Car batteries contain hazardous materials, and proper disposal is crucial for environmental protection. Professionals are equipped to handle the recycling or disposal of old batteries in an environmentally friendly manner.

While some car owners may have the skills and knowledge to handle basic battery-related tasks, it's generally advisable to consult with professionals for more complicated issues or when in doubt. This approach helps ensure safety, accurate diagnosis, and proper resolution of the problem.

    : In some models, issues
with the timing chain tensioner have been reported, leading to potential engine
damage.

It's crucial to keep in mind that regular maintenance can importantly
reduce the likelihood of these problems. Additionally, BMW has implemented
improvements and recalls addressing some of these issues in newer models. If
you're considering purchasing a BMW, researching the specific model and year
for common issues, and ensuring proper maintenance has been performed can help
mitigate potential problems.

You press your foot on the brake pedal and hear a loud screeching noise. Brake problems can be dangerous, and that's why brake repair is an important part of vehicle maintenance. Regular brake repair and maintenance are needed for your safety on the road and the overall life of your car. Don't wait until you hear that dreaded screech or experience reduced braking performance. Schedule regular brake inspections and repairs to ensure your brakes are in top-notch condition.

Safety should always be your top priority when it comes to driving. Your brakes allow you to stop and slow down when needed to avoid accidents. Regular brake inspections and repairs can help prevent potential accidents.

      Early Detection Saves Money

Brake issues often start small and get worse over time. What might start as a little squeak, or a soft brake pedal can turn into an expensive repair if left alone. Regular brake inspections can catch these problems early, saving you money in the long run. Ignoring brake issues can lead to more extensive damage, which could affect other brake components and compromise your safety.

      Maintaining Resale Value

If you ever plan to sell or trade in your vehicle, keeping it in excellent condition is important for getting the best resale value. Regular brake repair and maintenance helps with the value of your car.

      Increased Life Expectancy

Your brakes are put through a lot of wear and tear every time you drive. Over time, the brake pads and rotors wear down due to friction. Replacing them on time means you won't have to replace the entire system too soon, which can be costly.

      Improved Performance

Well-maintained brakes also contribute to better performance. When your brakes are in good condition, they respond more efficiently, providing better stopping power and control.

      Faulty Sensors:

Modern cars have lots of sensors that keep an eye on
different parts of the engine. If one of these sensors detects a problem, it
can trigger the engine light.

      Gas Cap Issue:

Something as simple as not tightening your gas cap properly
can cause the engine light to come on.

      Emission Problems:

If your car's emission system isn't working correctly, it
can trigger the engine light.

      When you see
the engine light, stay calm. It doesn't always mean something super serious is
wrong with your car.

      Here are the
steps to follow:

      Check for Obvious Problems:

Sometimes, it's a small issue you can see, like a
loose gas cap. If you find something obvious, try fixing it.

      Get the Code:

The engine light is like a secret code your car is sending
you. Your mechanic uses a special tool called an OBD-II scanner to read this
code.

      Consult a Professional: I

t's best to have a professional mechanic check it out.
They'll know what needs to be fixed and can help keep your car running
smoothly.

      Prevention
is Key

      The best way
to deal with the engine light is to prevent it from turning on in the first
place.

      Here's how
you can do that:

      Regular Maintenance:

Make sure your car gets its regular check-ups. This includes
oil changes, filter replacements, and other routine maintenance tasks.

      Drive Carefully:

Avoid aggressive driving and sudden stops, as they can put
extra strain on your car's engine.

      Listen to Your Car:

If you hear any strange noises or notice any changes in how
your car drives, don't ignore them. Addressing issues early can prevent the
engine light from coming on.

An A service on a Mercedes is a regular maintenance service that is recommended for cars with an odometer reading of approximately 10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. and then approximately every 20,000 miles or 2 years after that.

The service includes an oil and filter change, a visual inspection of the engine, a brake system inspection, tire check, and any necessary fluid and filter replacements.

But a B service on a Mercedes is a more involved service that usually occurs after every two A services. In addition to an oil and filter change, the B service includes a more in-depth inspection of the engine components, an inspection of the suspension and steering systems, a cabin air filter replacement, and a brake fluid flush. This service is more thorough than the A service.

As the weather heats up, the importance of a well-functioning air conditioning system becomes increasingly evident. We all rely on our A/C to keep us cool and comfortable during hot summer days. But what happens when your A/C system is not working properly? One common issue that arises is when the A/C system fails to cool down the cabin properly. This is often a sign that it's time to recharge the A/C system.

Refrigerant is a critical component of any A/C system. It's the liquid that flows through the system, absorbing heat and converting hot air into cool air. Without enough refrigerant, your air conditioning system won’t be able to do its job properly, and the cabin will not cool down. It’s not only frustrating but also uncomfortable, especially on a hot day in Jamesburg or anywhere else for that matter.

If you notice that it’s taking longer than usual to cool down the cabin, or if the A/C system is not working at all, it’s essential to have it inspected by a qualified professional. A qualified team like Platt's Performance Plus, Inc. can help you with an A/C recharge service. An A/C recharge service involves adding refrigerant to your A/C system to ensure that it's functioning correctly.

It’s important to note that the A/C system is a closed system. This means that if there's a lack of refrigerant, something is not working correctly. If the issue is ignored for an extended period, it could cause additional damage to the A/C system. It is essential to address any A/C issues as soon as possible to avoid more significant problems in the future.

In addition to keeping you cool during the summer months, the A/C system also plays an important role in defrosting your car's windshield in the winter. If there's not enough refrigerant in the system, the A/C system won't be able to perform this critical function. It's crucial to have your A/C system checked and recharged as needed to ensure that it's working correctly all year round.

In conclusion, having a well-functioning A/C system is crucial for your comfort and safety while driving. If you notice that your A/C system is not working correctly, don't hesitate to have it inspected by a qualified professional. An A/C recharge service may be necessary to keep your system functioning correctly and avoid more significant problems in the future.

The engine cooling system, including the engine coolant, manages some of the heat, transferring it from the engine to the atmosphere. In the winter, some of that heat even keeps you warm inside your car. If engine coolant in your Toyota, Ford, Chevy, or other type of vehicle isn’t working properly, the engine might not maintain proper temperature, which can affect performance and fuel economy.

For the most part, engine coolant doesn’t “wear out,” but it can happen. Mechanical problems can lead to a loss of coolant, which can then trigger major problems.

Low engine coolant can cause overheating and engine damage. Used coolant can turn acidic— even newer long-life coolant— as it attacks the metal, plastic, and rubber parts of your engine cooling system.

Regular coolant inspection is a key step to maintaining your engine for the long haul.

Are your headlights not helping you see at night?

With a headlight restoration, we can clean the lenses to get rid of any dirt from the protective coating. The headlight restoration service we perform can save you money in the long run. By maintaining them you’ll see clearly and drive safely for years.

Your headlights can start to wear down after 3 or more years. The sun and rain can also make them dull and yellow. How often you drive your car and if you park your car outside will make them worse.

Most cars have headlights that are covered with a clear protective coating that prevents scratching and other damage. UV rays from the sun, salt, and dirt are just a few things that can wear down the lens coating and make your lights cloudy. The lenses can blur your sight on the road especially at night and in the rain. They can use a good cleaning!

Scratches and other headlight issues are dangerous as the amount of light you get will make it hard to see in the dark or rain. If you’re having a hard time seeing while driving at night or in the rain, you could be at a greater risk of getting into an accident.

By restoring your headlights, we can sand and polish the lenses to smooth over any cracks in the coating. This will help prevent moisture and dirt from getting inside the light and cracking the lens, which could lead to a costly repair down the road.

Check your lights for signs of cloudiness. If your lenses look cloudy, yellow, or scratched or if you struggle to see the headlight bulb it’s time to schedule a headlight restoration service.

At Platt’s Performance we can help you bring the light back to your headlights so you can see clearly and drive safely whatever the weather is like or whatever time of day it is.

Brake fluid is usually a light, clear color. If it's not clean or transparent, then your brake fluid is dirty and needs changing. The reservoir should have a label that says, “full line.” If the brake liquid falls below that line, it's a sign your need to change your brake fluid or top it off.

One thing you do not want is excessive copper in your brake fluid. Once the fluid reaches 200 copper parts per million, the brake fluid's corrosive effect increases greatly. This can potentially cause problems, requiring you to have an auto brake repair service performed.

If you can't remember the last time your automobile had a brake fluid service, it’s most likely overdue. If you notice a change in the feel of the brake pedal or in your stopping capabilities, make an appointment for an inspection to see if a brake fluid service may resolve this issue. Timeliness is very important when it comes to possible malfunctions that affect the safety of your vehicle.

Typically, a used car inspection is a simple process, yet extremely detailed. Our Quality technicians will drive the car on hilly terrain, bumps, and potholes to make sure the vehicle can withstand all types of surfaces and to see if the car has suspension or engine performance issues. They will also visually inspect the body of the vehicle to see if there are any damages to the vehicle.

If your cooling system stops working, it can make for an uncomfortable driving experience.

There are several things that can cause your heat to not work in your vehicle. You can have low coolant, need a coolant system repair, or have a clogged heater core.

You need to change your antifreeze (coolant) according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Each manufacturer will differ. It will be from 30,000 miles and up.

Not changing your coolant can clog your heater core. This can be an expensive repair. As the cooling system ages, mineral deposits from the coolant liquid build up, which can obstruct the circulation of fluid through the system. This can harm the water pump, tubes, and thermostat.

It's no secret that our cars emit air pollution. However, our vehicle's emissions system works to reduce the number of harmful gases that are released into the environment. The system also keeps your engine running quietly.

Computers, an array of sensors, computerized engine controls, fuel system components, and exhaust components all work together to control your vehicle’s emission output.

All vehicles, including your Toyota, Chevrolet, Honda, Ford, or foreign car, must adhere to the government standards of emissions, so it is important to get your emissions system repaired whenever needed.

How Do I Know If I Need Auto Electrical Service?

In older vehicles, a problem with your electric system probably means there is something wrong with your battery.

In older vehicles, a problem with your electric system probably means there is something wrong with your battery.

However, newer vehicles have more complex auto electrical systems, which have more potential for failure because of their extensive nature.

If there is an issue with your alternator, battery, or another component of your vehicle's electrical system, you could experience a wide range of symptoms, because modern vehicles are more reliant on their electrical systems.

The more information you give us about your vehicle, the faster we can identify what part of your vehicle is malfunctioning.
Here are some symptoms to look out for that indicate your vehicle needs an auto electrical service:

Your engine doesn't start up correctly.

We do “Personalized Automotive Repair” because each vehicle is driven differently.

Some of the different situations are driving frequency, if your drive your vehicle “rough”, how old your vehicle is and the quality of the oil you use.

Driving rough could be high accelerations and/or lots of stop and go driving.

Some may need to change their oil every 3,000 miles while others may need to change it every 5,000 miles -7,500 miles.

Even if you do not drive your car for 6 months, that oil is not good enough as it has been sitting too long.

If you wait too long to get your oil changed, you risk running into serious mechanical problems with your car's engine. Since oil is a lubricant, protection against friction and heat during the combustion process is reduced once it begins to break down

Vehicles that sit unused for long periods are especially vulnerable to engine moisture because they aren't producing the heat from normal operation responsible for evaporating moisture and condensation.

Noise usually comes from a dying compressor, but some other common causes can be a cross-contaminated refrigerant or the use of the wrong lubricant.

It is imperative to get your air conditioning repaired, especially in hot Middlesex County summers, and cold winters. As much as we rely on AC to cool our vehicles down in the Summer, it also keeps your windows free from fogging in the Winter.

If you hear your brakes making any of these noises, it likely means your brake pads or brake shoes are completely worn.

If you ignore a sound when stepping on your brakes, you may risk damaging either the brake rotors or brake drums.

Vibration or shaking when braking also means your brakes need attention.

You may also see your brake light come on. This light could be telling you that you left your parking brake on, but it can also mean you are low on brake fluid, need brake pads, a wheel sensor, or something is wrong with your ABS system.

When you have your maintenance service or oil change you should have your brakes checked each time.

Taking care of your brakes is crucial to maintaining a safe driving experience for you and your passengers. It is a feature you use every day, and even a slight change can indicate something is wrong.

The wheels on your vehicle can go out of balance from everyday wear and tear or imperfections from the manufacturing process. If you notice any vibrations on your steering wheel or the floor of your vehicle, there is a possibility that you need to get a balancing service.

Wheel balancing is the process of balancing the tire and wheel assembly. This ensures that your vehicle will travel evenly and that there are no weight imbalances between the body of your vehicle and the tires. By ensuring that the weight is evenly distributed on the tires and wheels of your vehicle, will minimize the amount of vibration. Getting your wheel balanced will guarantee a smoother ride, and even tire wear.

Cruise control can help save you an average of 7-14% on gas thanks to its ability to maintain a continuous speed. Otherwise, the constant change in acceleration and deceleration can use more gas.

Have your AC compressor checked if your AC is not cooling the way it should, or if there are odd smells.

If the compressor fails, the rest of the system fails with it, and your car, truck, or SUV may not cool the car on a hot day or defrost the windows when cold since there’s no way to move the refrigerant through the system.
